The long-pending Bengaluru Business Corridor (BBC), earlier known as the Peripheral Ring Road (PRR), has moved an inch closer with Bengaluru-based Shankaranarayana Constructions (SNC) receiving the Letter of Acceptance (LoA) for the project’s first construction package. The company emerged as the lowest bidder for the package, which covers a 21-km stretch between Madavara and Ballari Road.BBC Chairman L.K. Atheeq said that the SNC has quoted 4.9% above the estimated project cost for the package, taking the value to around ₹3,500 crore, including maintenance.At-grade and elevatedThe package comprises a mix of at-grade and elevated infrastructure. The works include three cloverleaf interchanges, a grade separator, two rail overbridges and about 7.5 km of elevated corridor. The proposed carriageway will have 12 lanes, along with dedicated space for utilities.First proposed in 2007 as a solution to growing congestion on Bengaluru’s peripheral roads, the corridor has faced repeated delays, largely due to land acquisition and funding challenges. The access-controlled road is expected to improve connectivity between major highways entering the city while reducing pressure on existing arterial routes. The SNC has previously executed a major chunk of the elevated metro corridor along the Outer Ring Road.Three packagesTo expedite execution, the first phase of the corridor, spanning 73.4 km, has been split into three packages. While the first package runs from Madavara to Ballari Road, the second will connect Ballari Road and Old Madras Road, and the third will extend from Old Madras Road to Hosur Road. While the BBC Ltd., a special purpose vehicle created for the project, has achieved significant progress in land acquisition for package 1, leading to awarding of the contract for civil works, it continues to face stiff opposition to acquire lands for Package 2 and 3, delaying the progress. The overall BBC project is currently estimated to cost around ₹27,000 crore, of which nearly ₹21,000 crore has been earmarked for land acquisition. The remaining expenditure will go towards civil construction and associated infrastructure works. Funding for the project is proposed through loans from the Housing and Urban Development Corporation Limited.Once completed, the corridor will consist of eight main carriageway lanes and four-lane service roads. Toll collection is proposed to be undertaken by the BDA through a private contractor. Published - June 13, 2026 07:28 pm IST
