Nearly 60 kg of suspected ganja was seized from the Ernakulam Rural police limits in less than two weeks after the launch of ‘Operation Toofan: The Narco Hunt’, a State-wide anti-drug mission.Around 60 cases were registered, and 73 people were arrested under the Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act after the drive started on June 1, the rural police said on Saturday (June 13, 2026). The police also seized 780 grams of suspected hashish oil and 5 grams of suspected MDMA.The largest ganja seizure under Operation Toofan was the recovery of 34 kg of the suspected narcotic substance from Kunnuvazhi from three West Bengal natives. The accused were intercepted while travelling in an autorickshaw. The contraband had been procured from Odisha and was being transported after being brought by train to Aluva, the police said.In another major seizure, the police confiscated 12 kg of suspected ganja brought from Odisha at the Angamaly railway station. Two West Bengal natives were arrested in connection with the case.During inspections conducted in Perumbavoor town, the police seized suspected ganja, hashish oil, and heroin. Four sacks of banned tobacco products were also recovered. Two young women migrant workers were arrested for their alleged involvement in drug trafficking.So far this year, the rural police have seized contraband including nearly 400 kg of suspected ganja, 775 grams of MDMA, 780 grams of hashish oil, and 680 grams of heroin.
