In a bid to combat the alarming rise in pedestrian fatalities, the RTMC convened urgent meetings with local municipalities in the Free State, aiming to enhance road safety measures ahead of the busy long weekend.
The Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has raised concerns over a sharp increase in road fatalities in the Free State, making it the only province in the country to record a rise in deaths while all others reported declines.
According to road fatality statistics analysed by the RTMC, the province has recorded 315 fatalities so far this year, including 105 pedestrian deaths.
The figures represent a 23% increase in road fatalities compared with the same period last year.
In response to the worsening situation, RTMC Chief Executive Officer Adv Makhosini Msibi convened an urgent meeting with senior managers from the Maluti-a-Phofung, Dihlabeng, Metsimaholo, Mangaung, and Matjhabeng municipalities on Thursday to discuss measures aimed at reducing pedestrian fatalities in the province.
