South Africa's youth face a growing road safety crisis, with nearly half of all fatalities in 2024 involving young drivers.

South Africa's youth continue to bear the brunt of the country's road safety crisis, with young people aged between 20 and 39 accounting for nearly half of all road fatalities recorded in 2024.

As the country marks Youth Month and winter weather conditions take hold across several provinces, the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC) has issued a warning to young drivers, passengers, pedestrians, and cyclists to exercise greater caution on the roads.

According to RTMC statistics, 5,842 of the 12,172 road fatalities recorded in 2024 involved young people between the ages of 20 and 39.

Road crashes remain one of the leading causes of unnatural deaths in South Africa, with authorities warning that winter conditions are likely to increase the risks faced by road users.
