President Prabowo Subianto has approved plans by former vice president Jusuf Kalla’s family conglomerate to invest up to Rp 70 trillion (US$3.9 billion) in hydropower and gas-fired power projects as the country pushes for energy self-sufficiency and to expand power supply to support economic growth.Kalla said on Thursday he had discussed the investment plan directly with Prabowo during a roughly 30-minute meeting at the State Palace, with talks centered on expanding the country’s energy capacity as the President pursues economic growth of up to 8 percent by the end of his term in 2029.

“We discussed with the President ways to improve Indonesia’s energy capacity and achieve energy self-sufficiency,” Kalla told reporters after the meeting.
