Luka Modric, the 40-year-old Croatian midfielder who won the Ballon d’Or in 2018, is expected to hang up his boots after the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Italian journalist Nicolo Schira reported the news in May 2026, noting that Modric is inclined to announce his retirement from professional football following the tournament.
His contract with AC Milan expires in June 2026, and this World Cup will be his fifth appearance for Croatia.
From the pitch to the blockchain
On April 9, 2026, Modric was appointed as the global brand ambassador for CoinW, a crypto asset trading platform. CoinW launched a World Trading Championship with a $1.2 million prize pool, timed to coincide with the FIFA World Cup.
Separately from the CoinW ambassador role, a fan token called $MODRIC launched on the Solana network around October 2025 through the Trendex.gg platform. By early June 2026, the token’s market cap sat at approximately $100K.
