Veterinary students get front-row experience as lion becomes “royal patient”.

A truly regal arrival at the Onderstepoort Veterinary Academic Hospital (OVAH) Wildlife Clinic turned an ordinary day into something closer to a scene from a documentary, as a lion was welcomed not with fanfare, but with scanners, monitors and a team of quietly focused experts ready to get to work.

Even in a clinical setting, the sense of awe was unmistakable, this was no ordinary patient, but a symbol of the wild brought carefully into human care.

"This lion was referred to us for a comprehensive diagnostic work-up, including both an ultrasound examination and a CT scan."

For the veterinary team and students at the facility, the case became a rare opportunity to step beyond theory and into lived experience, where every movement around the patient carried both precision and respect.
