The fatal shooting of Toronto police officer Marc Pinizzotto early Thursday morning is the third death involving an on-duty police officer in Ontario this year.
A new study by the Criminalization and Punishment Education Project (CPEP) reveals that 413 police officers died in the line of duty in Canada between 1962 and June 2026, not including Pinizzotto. The research shows the country has averaged 6.4 police deaths per year, with several years exceeding 10 fatalities.
