The media rights organisation, through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub, also called on the Nigeria Police Force to issue an official apology to Akindoju and investigate the officers involved in the operation.

The International Press Centre (IPC) has condemned the arrest and detention of the Secretary of the Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ), Osun State Council, Olalekan Akindoju, describing the incident as an unlawful act that raises fresh concerns about press freedom and the treatment of journalists in Nigeria.

The media rights organisation, through its Safety and Protection of Journalists (SPJ) Hub, also called on the Nigeria Police Force to issue an official apology to Akindoju and investigate the officers involved in the operation.

According to a statement issued on Friday by the Press Freedom Officer of the IPC-SPJ Hub, Melody Akinjiyan, Akindoju was arrested at his residence in Osogbo, Osun State, during an early morning police operation on Thursday.

Akindoju, while speaking with the organisation, said armed policemen stormed his residence at about 6am, arrested him and confiscated his mobile phone without providing any explanation for their actions.
