The 2026 FIFA World Cup is barely underway, and South Africa already have a problem. Sphephelo Sithole, the 27-year-old central midfielder who was supposed to anchor Bafana Bafana’s midfield engine, instead became the first player sent off in the entire tournament during their opening match against Mexico on June 11.
South Africa lost 1-0. And Sithole’s stat line reads like a cautionary tale about what happens when a World Cup stage proves too big, too fast.
A match that went sideways early
Things started going wrong for South Africa almost immediately. Mexico’s Julian Quinones found the back of the net in the 9th minute, giving Mexico an early cushion. Then came the 49th minute. Sithole committed a foul on Brian Gutierrez that referees deemed a denial of a clear goalscoring opportunity. Out came the red card. The first of the 2026 World Cup.
