A 10-year-old girl from California is being praised for her quick thinking after her actions helped save her family from a fast-moving house fire in the early hours of the morning. Elizabeth “Lizzy” Morgan woke up when the power suddenly went out and, within moments, realized something was seriously wrong. Her decision to alert everyone inside the home gave her family enough time to escape before the flames spread further. The fire broke out shortly after 3 a.m. on June 10 at a home near West Cypress Road and Duarte Avenue in Oakley, California. According to reports from ABC7, CBS News, and PEOPLE, Lizzy was awake playing video games when the house suddenly lost power.A sudden power outage revealed a dangerous situationWhat first seemed like a routine power interruption quickly turned into an emergency. After the electricity went out, Lizzy looked outside to see what was happening. That was when she spotted flames and immediately began warning everyone in the house.“The power went out in the house and when it went out, she freaked out, looked out the window to kind of see what was going on, seeing the flames, started yelling at everybody in the house, waking all of us up,” her mother, Nena Morgan, told CBS News. “She is our hero.”Lizzy ran through the house shouting that the home was on fire. Her warnings woke the people inside, allowing them to begin evacuating before conditions became even more dangerous.Family escaped before firefighters arrivedThe home was occupied by four adults and three children. Family members said Lizzy's actions gave everyone the chance to get out safely.“They just started running through the house screaming for us, telling us that the house is on fire. My husband got up, verified what was going on. Came to the front of the house. Flames were already coming through our oldest daughter's bedroom, which is the front of the house. And then it was just crazy!” Morgan said. When Nena Morgan woke up, she found the house already filling with smoke.“When I woke up, I could just see smoke billowing through the house,” she said. “I was sound asleep in bed with my husband. I don't know what would have happened if Elizabeth wasn't awake.”The Contra Costa County Fire Protection District said firefighters responded to reports of the blaze at approximately 3:29 a.m. By the time crews reached the scene, everyone inside had already escaped.Firefighters faced additional challengesAccording to Contra Costa County Fire Battalion Chief Jeff Burris, firefighters encountered heavy flames when they arrived. The situation was made more difficult by fallen power lines near the home.“We arrived on scene to have the front of the house on fire, with the power lines between the pole and the house had dropped onto the ground and were actively arcing, hindering our initial fire attack,” Burris said.In another interview, Burris explained that emergency crews had to adjust their response because of the dangerous electrical hazards around the property.Officials believe the fire may have started near the front porch or front section of the home, although the exact cause remains under investigation.A family's loss and a community's supportWhile every person inside survived, the family suffered heartbreaking losses. Two dogs and a cat died in the fire, and most of the family's belongings were destroyed. The house had been home to the Morgans for 14 years, and many personal items, including photographs, keepsakes, and even car keys, were lost.Despite the devastation, Nena Morgan said she remains grateful that her daughter acted when she did.“I totally think that Elizabeth Morgan is a hero because, I don't even know if we would have made it if we were all asleep. One of dogs died from smoke inhalation, so it just got bad - fast! So yeah, Lizzy Morgan is my hero,” she said.Morgan also praised her daughter's calm response during a frightening situation.“I am very proud of her. I am proud that they kept their composure. I am proud that they just knew what to do and just kept it together while they got smoke and flames around them.”As the family begins rebuilding their lives, local residents have stepped forward with donations of food, clothing, and other essentials. A fundraising campaign has also been launched to help them recover from the loss. For the Morgan family, the night could have ended very differently. Instead, because one 10-year-old noticed something was wrong and acted without hesitation, seven people made it out alive. That is why many in Oakley are calling Elizabeth “Lizzy” Morgan a hero.
