With the southwest monsoon further intensifying, continuous and widespread rainfall lashed Kanniyakumari district on Thursday, with the ghat areas receiving heavy showers.According to Regional Metrological Centre (RMC), Chennai, heavy rain accompanied by thunderstorms and lightning had been forecast for Kanniyakumari on Thursday and Friday. The RMC also warned that wind speed reaching 40-50 kmph at isolated places across the district.Several parts of the district witnessed drizzle to medium showers throughout the day, while western part of the district and ghat areas received intense rainfall in the afternoon.As rain continued unabated, school, college students and office-goers had a tough time commuting.The water level at Pechiparai, one of the district’s major reservoirs, stood at 33.62 feet on Thursday against the total capacity of 48 feet. The inflow of water to the dam was 1,882 cusecs and discharge was 490 cusecs.The rainfall received in the district ended at 6 a.m. on Thursday was (in mm): Perunchani 30.8, Surulacode 23.6, Nagercoil 16.2, Kottaram 22.6, Mukkudal dam 22.8, Balamore 35.4, Colachel 30, Thuckalay 15, Sivalogam 24.2 and Chittar I recorded 32.4 mm rainfall.
