The death of 29-year-old call centre agent Gcina Dhladhla at Cartrack's Rosebank offices has intensified into a battle over what happened in the hours before she collapsed, with her family demanding accountability while the company rejects allegations that she was denied sick leave or prevented from going home.
The controversy has sparked public outrage, drawn the attention of labour authorities and prompted a police inquest, with both Cartrack and Dhladhla's family presenting sharply different versions of events.
In a statement released on Wednesday, Cartrack said Dhladhla suffered a "sudden and unexpected" medical emergency on Saturday morning after arriving at work with "no indication that she was unwell".
According to the company, she informed her manager at about 9am that she was feeling dizzy and nauseous before being assisted to the bathroom. When she failed to respond moments later, first responders and emergency medical services were activated.
"Our colleague arrived at work on Saturday morning with no indication that she was unwell."
