Substance approvals and import residues remain sticking points

Cyprus, the current holder of the Council presidency, is pushing for an agreement on the food safety simplification package on Friday, as some EU countries move to form a blocking minority.

The food and feed safety simplification plan was presented by the Commission in December in a bid to cut red tape and boost productivity for EU farming.

Negotiations in the Council are now entering their final phase, with a decision by EU ambassadors expected on Friday.

EU countries have already reached agreement on several aspects of the file, including extending data protection for biocidal products and easing rules on pesticide spraying by drones.
