The remaining major field of competition in telecommunications is fiber optics. This is confirmed by the successive developments in the market, which are reshaping the landscape. Wednesday’s agreement between PPC and Vodafone is also in this direction.

The two groups have agreed to establish a joint venture, in which they will participate equally, with a percentage of 50% each, through their subsidiaries FiberGrid and Fiber2All, respectively.

This means that the entire optical fiber infrastructure of PPC and Vodafone will be transferred to the new company, which will undertake the management of this specific activity at the wholesale level. In this way, a strong pole is created in the market, with a fiber optic network that will approach in size the largest network in the country today, that of OTE.

PPC’s fiber optic network has reached 1.88 million homes and businesses, of which 1.1 million are already technically ready for direct connection. At the same time, Vodafone’s fiber optic network has approximately 550,000 lines. Therefore, the merger of the two infrastructures creates a player that can be the main counterweight to OTE’s network.
