Washington, Jun 10 (EFE).- United States President Donald Trump cast doubt on Wednesday over the renewal of the USMCA free trade agreement with Canada and Mexico. «USMCA did one thing that I loved. After six years, it comes up for renewal. I don’t know that I’m going to renew it,» Trump said Wednesday, as he repeated his long-held complaints that the US doesn’t need anything from Canada or Mexico. Asked about the progress of negotiations to extend the agreement, amid tensions fueled by his tariff war, Trump insisted that the US should have surpluses with its trading partners. «The United States does much better. We don’t need anything that Canada has, we don’t need anything that Mexico has, but they need everything that we have, and they have to treat us better,» he said. The current trilateral agreement among the North American nations replaced NAFTA and took effect in 2020, establishing a joint review six years after its implementation. If the three countries agree to renew it before July 1, the pact would automatically be extended for another 16 years, a request Canada and Mexico have already made. Otherwise, a decade of annual reviews would begin before it could expire. Trump’s administration has already begun formal talks with Mexico to review the trilateral agreement. Meanwhile, Canadian Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc announced last week that he had a positive meeting with the US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer. Over the past year and a half, Washington has signaled that it does not want a simple automatic renewal of the treaty and is seeking significant changes, particularly in sectors such as the automotive industry and access to the Canadian dairy market.
