A terrorism investigation spanning Cyprus, Greece and several Asian countries has revealed previously undisclosed details about alleged planning meetings, recruitment efforts and possible international connections, Kathimerini understands.

The case centers on a 37-year-old Palestinian man arrested in Agios Nikolaos, Crete, whose testimony is scheduled for Thursday. He denies being an active member of Hamas and maintains he did not intend to participate in a terrorist attack.

According to police sources, three key participants in the case allegedly met in a secret location in Istanbul’s Basaksehir district, where members of Hamas were also staying. Investigators believe discussions there involved plans for attacks not only in Cyprus and Greece but also in Malaysia, Indonesia, Thailand, Turkey and Myanmar.

Authorities say one suspect arrested in Cyprus was initially asked to obtain and transport chemicals for explosives to Greece by sea. That plan allegedly changed after the recruitment of the 37-year-old suspect. Investigators have also identified several links to Germany.
