The signatories warned that Nigeria was approaching a critical point where insecurity, alleged electoral manipulation and the erosion of democratic institutions could converge into a broader national crisis.
A group of prominent Nigerians, including former Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission, Prof. Attahiru Jega, former Chief of Staff to the President, Prof. Ibrahim Gambari, and former President of the Nigerian Bar Association, Abubakar Mahmoud (SAN), have raised concerns over what they described as growing threats to Nigeria's democracy, worsening insecurity and the weakening of key state institutions.
The Nigerians expressed their concerns in a statement titled "Statement on the state of the nation by some concerned Nigerians," issued in Abuja on June 8, 2026, and made available to SaharaReporters on Wednesday.
The signatories warned that Nigeria was approaching a critical point where insecurity, alleged electoral manipulation and the erosion of democratic institutions could converge into a broader national crisis.
According to the group, the country's constitutional system of checks and balances is under increasing strain, with democratic institutions losing their independence and capacity to hold the executive arm of government accountable.
