Inspector General of Police, South Zone, Vijayendra Bidari, had a comprehensive discussion here on Wednesday with senior police officers of four southern districts to review the law and order situation in these districts, officials said.Deputy Inspector General of Police, Tirunelveli Range, R. Thirunavukkarasu, Superintendents of Police, V. Prassannakumar of Tirunelveli, R. Stalin of Kanniyakumari, Ashok Kumar of Tenkasi and Abhishek Gupta of Thoothukudi participated in the review meeting.Sources in the police said the recent attack with caste overtone on a few at Nettoor near Alangulam and the attack unleashed by an armed gang on 6 others at Seethaparpanallur came-up for the review.Mr. Bidari also urged his subordinates to expedite the trial of the cases against history-sheeters so that their early conviction by the court would effectively avert a number of crimes in future. The caste enmity, which is being fostered by the self-styled leaders from almost every caste group in Tirunelveli, Tenkasi and Thoothukudi districts, should be crushed without mercy, the IG said. The rate of conviction in crime cases, POCSO (Protection of Children from Sexual Offences Act) cases etc. was reviewed. The composition of all-women ‘Singappenn Special Force’, which was launched a couple of days ago to tackle crime against women and the children, was also reviewed as this elite group are to be deployed in all the districts within a couple of days. Upon receiving distress calls from the women or the children, the ‘Singappenn Special Force’ would swiftly come to the victims’ rescue. As more than 15% of the vehicles, particularly bikes, are roaming around with fake registration numbers or without registration number plates, as most of these two-wheelers are used for unlawful activities, the IG instructed his subordinates to intensify vehicle check to weed-out these vehicles and crack whip against rash driving, riding bikes without helmets, 3 riding on a bike etc., which often cause ruckus on highways. While imposing fines on the violations like rash driving or riding two-wheelers without helmet, the vehicles with fake registration numbers or without registration number plates should be detained immediately, the IG ordered, the sources said.“In an altercation between two friends near a liquor shop near Sivanthipatti on Palayamkottai outskirts recently, one of them was murdered by the other with a stone. The murderer escaped on his bike, but was nabbed later. In a recent brawl broke-out among the friends in a bar attached to the liquor shop in Sivaganga district over sharing a bottle of beer, one of them was assaulted by others and the victim, who went out of the bar immediately, returned with a knife within a next few minutes to murder one of the attackers. Since the murderer had gone to his home after the assault on him to take the knife and returned to the bar on his bike to kill his friend, the IG believes that intense vehicle check would avert crimes like this. Moreover, the vehicles detained for violations of law should not be released at least for a week even if the violators are ready to pay the fine,” the source added.
