Sewage pools at three spots within the Thoothukudi Government Medical College Hospital premises present nauseating picture at this place, which is supposed to ensure health and hygiene. The sewage from the bathrooms and the toilets of TKMCH is getting collected in a well-like structure from where it is pumped to the underground drainage system. After the two motors fitted in this structure broke down a couple of months ago, the sewage started overflowing to crete pools near the paediatric ward, the entrance on the Tiruchendur Road and the mortuary to give hellish experience to the visitors. After a lot of complaints from the patients and the intervention of the office-bearers of ruling TVK, the PWD sent a few to repair the defunct motors, which were lifted on Wednesday forenoon for repairing.“The repaired motors are almost ready for pumping out the sewage,” said Rahul, Assistant Executive Engineer, PWD.However, the doctors of TKMCH said on Wednesday evening that the motors were yet to be serviced and fitted in place. When asked about the trees grown abundantly on the TKMCH buildings, Mr. Rahul said a special drive had been launched to remove these trees to save the buildings. On the door-less toilets in the TKMCH, Mr. Rahul replied that the patients had damaged the doors.“We’ve placed orders for 60 wood polymer composite doors, which are durable and waterproof. It will be fitted within a week to bring the toilets to use,” he said. Published - June 10, 2026 07:54 pm IST
