Brighton & Hove Albion are in active negotiations with Joel Veltman over a new contract, as the veteran defender approaches the final weeks of his current deal. The Dutchman’s agreement expires at the end of the summer, putting a quiet urgency on talks that both parties seem keen to resolve.
Veltman, who turned 34 in January, has been a fixture at the Amex Stadium since arriving from Ajax in July 2020. That transfer cost Brighton just £900,000 after they activated a release clause.
A bargain buy that kept paying dividends
He’s racked up 178 appearances for the Seagulls, serving as a versatile defensive option who can slot in at right-back or centre-back. His contract history at the club tells its own story of mutual appreciation. In July 2023, Veltman signed a two-year extension. Then in early 2025, Brighton triggered a one-year option baked into that deal, locking him in through June 2026.
The defender recently switched agents, which appears to have opened the door to more formal discussions about his future. Veltman himself has acknowledged as much publicly, stating he is “quite open” to exploring what comes next.
