More than 21,000 runners are expected to participate in the 2026 Comrades Marathon, with police, traffic authorities, private security and marshals deployed to ensure a safe event.
KwaZulu-Natal police have declared the entire Comrades Marathon route a no-fly zone and warned that any unauthorised drones will be taken down as part of extensive security measures for the 2026 race.
KwaZulu-Natal police spokesperson Colonel Robert Netshiunda said the Provincial Joint Operational and Intelligence Structure (PROVJOINTS) had put comprehensive safety and security plans in place to ensure an incident-free event as more than 21,000 runners prepare to take part in the 99th edition of the Ultimate Human Race.
“The entire Comrades Marathon route has been declared a no-fly zone and only authorised operational aircraft and drones will be permitted to fly,” said Netshiunda.
“Any unauthorised drone will be taken down operationally in accordance with the law.”
