An Indonesian man was arrested for allegedly murdering his mother-in-law by feeding her chicken satay laced with rat poison, police said. The suspect, identified as Purwadi Wahyudi, 40, used a courier service to deliver the poisoned meal to the victim’s home in Central Java’s Boyolali area. The victim, identified by her first name Aminah, died shortly after eating the food on 18 May, police said. Satay is a popular Southeast Asian dish comprising seasoned meat skewered on sticks and grilled over charcoal. The incident came to light the next morning when Aminah’s daughter Luriyanti Putri – the suspect’s sister-in-law – arrived to leave her child with her mother. Finding the house locked, she asked neighbours to help check inside. After entering the house, the witnesses found Aminah lying on the floor. They later told police she had vomit around her mouth and on her clothing. Family members grew suspicious after recalling that Aminah had mentioned receiving a delivery of chicken satay from an unknown sender. At their urging, police exhumed her body and carried out an autopsy.“The forensic results, autopsy and laboratory examinations by the Central Java Police found rat poison substances in the victim’s body,” Boyolali’s police chief, AKBP Indra Maulana Saputra, said, according to local news outlet Detik. Investigators said the suspect purchased the satay from a local food vendor before adding poison and arranging for it to be delivered through a courier service. He allegedly placed the order through an account bearing the name and picture of his sister-in-law, Ms Putri, in what police believe was an attempt to divert suspicion.“The suspect added poison to the satay by dripping it through an opening at the top of the package while travelling from Kartasura to Pandeyan village, which was the meeting point with the Gosend driver,” Mr Indra said, referring to the courier service allegedly used Mr Purwadi. According to police, Mr Purwadi admitted to purchasing the satay, poisoning it and arranging for its delivery to his mother-in-law.Investigators said the suspect told them he was resentful of his mother-in-law and felt that she had never respected or acknowledged him.If convicted, he could face the death penalty or life imprisonment, or a prison sentence of 20 years.
