Travelers using Athens International Airport, also known as Eleftherios Venizelos Airport, on Wednesday and Thursday should expect significant flight delays as aviation authorities conduct scheduled inspections of critical landing guidance systems, officials said.
The inspections, carried out by the Hellenic Civil Aviation Authority (HCAA), are scheduled to take place between 3 p.m. and 6 p.m. local time on both days.
The checks focus on the airport’s precision approach aids – navigation systems and visual guidance equipment that help aircraft maintain a safe and accurate descent path during landing, particularly in poor weather or low-visibility conditions.
The inspections are being conducted using a specialized aircraft and require a temporary reduction in air traffic flow during the testing period, resulting in delays across the airport’s flight schedule.
According to airline estimates, delays are expected to range from 45 to 60 minutes for both arriving and departing flights. The disruptions are expected to affect all flights operating through Greece’s largest airport, with the possibility of knock-on delays extending to later services.
