The Corfu Port Authority reported a significant increase in both passenger traffic and cruise ship calls during the first five months of 2026, reaffirming the Port of Corfu’s growing role as a key gateway to the Adriatic and a strategic hub within the Greek maritime sector.According to the Authority’s consolidated figures, the port welcomed 135 cruise ship calls between January and May 2026, compared with 127 during the same period in 2025, representing an increase of 6.3%. Total passenger traffic reached 225,018 passengers, up from 203,264 a year earlier, marking a 10.7% increase. The results are particularly noteworthy given that geopolitical developments in the wider region affected international cruise operations, leading to seven cruise call cancellations at the Port of Corfu in the January–May period. The cancellations accounted for 12,757 passengers, making the destination’s strong growth trajectory even more significant.According to the Authority, the continued increase in traffic highlights Corfu’s position as one of the Mediterranean’s most popular cruise destinations, while also supporting the island’s economy, tourism sector and local businesses. The port’s growth strategy was also showcased in Posidonia 2026, where the Authority presented its vision for further strengthening Corfu’s position on the map of international maritime transport. During the exhibition, Chief Executive Officer Dimitris Apergis outlined plans to establish Corfu as the “Major Port of the Adriatic”—a modern and competitive maritime hub playing a leading role in cruise operations, maritime tourism, yachting and regional sea transport services. As he noted, Corfu’s strategic geographical location, combined with both existing and planned investments and infrastructure projects, creates favourable conditions for further enhancing the port’s role as a key reference point for the Adriatic and the Mediterranean. At the same time, the Corfu Port Authority is steadily advancing its development programme aimed at upgrading infrastructure and improving service quality. As part of this strategy, two major studies with a combined budget of 414,000 euros are scheduled for completion in 2026, covering the development of a new Cruise Passenger Terminal and a new Non-Schengen Passenger Terminal. These projects represent an important step towards the future modernization of the port’s facilities, improving the passenger experience and further strengthening the port’s competitiveness in the regional maritime and cruise market.
