Three Mississippi residents filed a class-action lawsuit on June 9 against xAI and SpaceX in federal court, alleging that a gas-fired power plant fueling xAI’s data centers has turned their neighborhood into a noise nightmare. The suit claims to represent more than 10,000 affected individuals.
The complaint centers on the constant drone and vibrations produced by dozens of gas turbines operating in Southaven, Mississippi. It’s the second major legal action targeting xAI’s operations in the area in less than two months.
A growing turbine problem
At least 46 unpermitted methane gas turbines are reportedly running at the xAI facility in Southaven, up from an initial count of 27. That expansion happened without the kind of permanent environmental permits you’d normally expect for an industrial power operation of that scale.
Mississippi regulators had previously granted temporary permits for the gas turbines, capped at 12 months while permanent installations were being evaluated.
