OTTAWA—Gun owners who refuse to hand over now-banned weapons to the federal government will no longer face criminal liability this fall, with the Liberals once again extending an amnesty order in the face of a Supreme Court challenge of its 2020 ban on “assault-style” firearms.

It will be the fourth time Ottawa has punted back its deadline for gun owners to give up their weapons or face criminalization, though Public Safety Minister Gary Anandasangaree said Tuesday the Liberal government is still moving forward with its buyback program in most of the country.
