A man was arrested in Kya Sands informal settlement on Tuesday as City Power, Eskom and law enforcement agencies dismantled what officials described as an organised illegal electricity network allegedly operated by a criminal syndicate.

A South African man was arrested on Tuesday during a major operation in the Kya Sands informal settlement, where City Power and Eskom disconnected what officials described as an organised illegal electricity network.

The joint operation, conducted alongside the Johannesburg Metropolitan Police Department (JMPD) and the South African Police Service, targeted alleged syndicates accused of stealing and installing electricity infrastructure before selling power to residents.

Speaking to IOL News on the sidelines of the operation, City Power chief administration officer Thamsanqa Mathiso said officials were responding to what the utility calls "network hijacking".

"What it means is that syndicates go into a particular area, commission infrastructure and use it to supply electricity to residents in an informal settlement," said Mathiso.
