Union demands increase in wages for contract workers

Chennai Metropolitan Water Supply and Sewerage Board Labourers’ Union has urged the State government to provide permanent jobs and better wages to Metrowater contract labourers.Office bearers of the Union met Gagandeep Singh Bedi, Additional Chief Secretary, Municipal Administration and Water Supply Department, on Monday regarding various demands. G. Beem Rao, former Maduravoyal MLA and the Union’s president said permanent jobs must be provided to workers who have completed 480 days of service. Several court cases related to regularisation of workers’ services are still pending. Besides implementing the old pension scheme and providing double wages for overtime work, the workers must also be extended other benefits like provident fund Employees’ State Insurance.
