Collector N.O. Sukhaputra who inaugurated a food safety exhibition in Virudhunagar on Monday.

Marking the World Food Safety Day, District Collector N.O. Sukhaputra appealed to the consumers to be cautious while taking food from outside here on Monday.Inaugurating the food safety exhibition organised by the Tamil Nadu Food Safety and Drug Administration Department at Virudhunagar Collectorate, he said that World Food Safety Day is observed on June 7 and that the United Nations had declared this day to raise awareness of the health risks caused by unsafe food.The consumers should ensure healthy and safe food and follow the guidelines issued at periodic intervals by the FSSAI officials. Any sub-standard or adulteration complaints should be brought to the notice of the officials for necessary action, he said.Later, the District Collector distributed an awareness booklet to the public on rapid testing methods to detect adulteration.The FSSAI officials said that they had set up various booths on how to spot adulterated food, nutrients to include in daily diet, the benefits of traditional diet and the regulations of the food safety department and among others.A senior official said that the food consumed should not only be tasty, but safe. The public should be aware of chemical-laden food products and adulterations.The District Collector, who went around the expo, said that it would create a better understanding of food safety for consumers and traders and suggested youngsters to take a visit to the exhibition.Food Safety Department District Designated Officer Mariappan, Food Safety Officers, government officials and a large number of public and activists participated.
