The Tamil Nadu Consumer Protection and Environment Research Centre has claimed that poor quality foods were offered at abnormal prices in Tiruvarur district. In a statement on Sunday, the centre has claimed that food safety norms were not being adhered by roadside eateries and hotels. Price of food/eatables have been increased citing LPG price increase, milk cost, sugar, and other essential commodity prices. At the same time, the quality or the quantity of food sold to the consumers were not up to the specifications laid down by the Food Safety and Standards Act.Moreover, the owner or employees or both attached to the food selling units should have completed the Food Safety Training and Certification programme conducted by the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India. The FSS Act mandates display of such certificates but seldom complied by those operating food retail outlets in Tiruvarur district.Another important regulation that the employees engaged in the preparation of food were to undergo regular health check up and public display of certifications that such persons did not possess any communicable diseases, as per the Act, was not adhered to by the hotel/restaurant/retail unit owners.Hence, the Centre exhorted the Tiruvarur district administration and the District Food Safety department to conduct regular checks at the hotels/restaurants/retailing outlets to ensure that quality food was made available at the prescribed weight/quantity and affordable prices to consumers.
