The commission's reaction comes amid fresh appeals from families of Nigerians reportedly detained in Libya, with some alleging that detainees are being asked to pay about N1.2 million each to secure their release.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has said that more than 20,000 Nigerians have been evacuated from Libya over the past decade, lamenting that many citizens continue to embark on dangerous irregular migration journeys to the North African country despite repeated rescue efforts.

In an exclusive interview with SaharaReporters, NIDCOM's spokesperson and Head of Media, Public Relations and Protocols Unit, Abdur-Rahman Balogun, said the challenge of irregular migration to Libya has persisted for nearly 10 years despite sustained interventions by the Nigerian government and international organisations.

“Libya issue has been on for almost 10 years. Nigeria and IOM must have evacuated over 20,000 victims but they keep on going,” Balogun told SaharaReporters.
