The Commission's position follows an appeal by the family of a Nigerian woman reportedly among hundreds of Nigerians being detained in Libya after allegedly entering the North African country through irregular migration routes.

The Nigerians in Diaspora Commission (NIDCOM) has advised Nigerians detained in Libya over immigration-related offences to seek legal representation and contact Nigerian diplomatic authorities, stressing that entering another country illegally attracts penalties under the laws of that country.

The Commission's position follows an appeal by the family of a Nigerian woman reportedly among hundreds of Nigerians being detained in Libya after allegedly entering the North African country through irregular migration routes.

A relative of one of the detainees had earlier told SaharaReporters that many Nigerians were being held in prison and allegedly required to pay about N1.2 million each to secure their release.

According to the source, most of the detainees and their families could not afford the amount being demanded.
