Developers have agreed to halve the size of a planned data centre in Utah that was originally intended to be 40,000 acres, or almost three times the size of Manhattan, after a public backlash, in the latest sign of growing opposition to the massive build-out of such facilities.

Venture capitalist Kevin O’Leary, known for appearing on the television programme Shark Tank, promised in a letter to Utah Senate President J. Stuart Adams to remove 19,430 acres from the facility’s footprint and would leave most of the remainder empty.

He said this would comply with Adams’ earlier call to reduce the size of the Stratos project by 75 percent.
