Lieutenant Governor of Ladakh, Vinai Kumar Saxena, approved a Rs 7.62 crore project for the comprehensive upgradation and beautification of Old Town of Leh, aimed at preserving its heritage character while improving infrastructure and visitor experience.The decision was taken following the LG's visit to the old town of Leh on March 15, when he talked about the preservation of the unique architecture of this heritage precinct. "Have approved a Rs 7.62 crore project for infrastructure upgradation and beautification of the Old Town. The project envisages creating a multi-purpose underground utility network, heritage-style pedestrian pathways and signages, ornamental lighting and improved public amenities, while preserving the unique heritage character of Ladakh's cultural and historical heart," Saxena informed.The officials said this project is a significant step towards enhancing civic infrastructure, urban aesthetics and visitor experience in one of the Himalayas most treasured heritage and tourist zones. "Our commitment is to transform Leh into a clean, organised, pedestrian-friendly and world-class tourist destination while safeguarding its rich heritage for future generations," said Saxena.The project includes the construction of a multipurpose trench and common utility duct for underground placement of overhead electric cables, sewerage lines, water supply networks, and communication cables besides the development of public amenities and beautification works around the historic Leh Palace. The officials stated that the initiative is in line with the LG's vision of transforming Leh into a clean, organised, pedestrian-friendly and world-class tourist destination, while preserving its unique heritage and architectural character.
