LifestyleFamilyParentingFire experts have shared a colour chart safety guide to help families keep their children visible when swimming in lakes and pools - and it all comes down to choosing the right colour15:47, 07 Jun 2026With the school holidays just around the corner, parents will soon be hitting the shops in search of swimming costumes for their little ones. But Plympton Fire Department is urging families not to simply go for the 'prettiest' or 'coolest' costume, and instead consider safety - with one handy colour chart helping adults choose the most visible swimwear, making it far easier to keep a watchful eye on their children.‌A post on their Facebook page reads: "This is a great safety guide for children swimming in lakes and swimming pools. The colour of the bathing suit can make it easier or more difficult to see children while they are swimming.‌"This is a good reminder to always have adult supervision when children are swimming. (Thanks to Praire Lakes Healthcare System.)"‌The post was accompanied by a colour guide illustrating how various coloured swimsuits appear in both lakes and pools.Alarmingly, white, blue, green and grey costumes were found to almost vanish entirely beneath the surface.‌The chart indicates that pink and orange are the safest choices for both pools and lakes, while yellow stands out well in lakes but less so in pools - with the reverse being true for purple.Making sure your child is dressed in a brightly coloured swimsuit could potentially prevent a dangerous situation, or help get them out of difficulty far more swiftly should anything go wrong. One user responded to the post saying: "I've always gone for neon when it comes to swim shorts for my boys. I also dress them in bright colours for days out too, easier to keep an eye on them. This is very useful info."‌Another said: "This is an excellent tip! No matter how prepared you think you may be, there is always something new to learn. Thank you."A third commented: "Very interesting, had never thought about the color before. Thank you for sharing."While another agreed: "I hear stories about when I was six or so, with a bunch of kids and adult supervision at the lake.Article continues below"A wave knocked me over and the adult spotted my bright yellow swimsuit and rescued me."Choose Daily Mirror as a 'Preferred Source' on Google News for quick access to the news you value.‌ParentingSwimming costumesSwimming poolsExpert Advice
