The roof of a school building was ripped off by strong winds and heavy rain on Sunday, narrowly averting a major tragedy. The incident occurred around 12.30 p.m. at St. Benedict MSC High School in Thannithodu, where the entire roof of the second floor of a classroom block was blown away by the gusty winds. Since it was a Sunday, the school was closed and no students or staff were inside the building, sparing the institution from a potentially disastrous accident.According to sources, the affected block housed at least two Class 10 divisions and a staff room. The dislodged roof was carried by the wind and landed on a vacant house nearby, causing no injuries. Preliminary verification indicated that the building had received a fitness certificate during the inspection conducted ahead of the reopening of schools. Authorities have launched a probe to determine the cause of the extensive damage. Published - June 07, 2026 07:21 pm IST
