A sudden spell of summer rain coupled with strong winds caused widespread damage in parts of Thrissur district on Saturday afternoon, with significant destruction reported at Koodalmanikyam Temple in Irinjalakuda.
A massive pandal erected as part of the temple’s ongoing festival collapsed in the powerful winds. The stage set up in front of the structure also collapsed under the impact. Roof tiles of the temple’s oottupura were blown away, adding to the damage.
In another incident nearby, a tree was uprooted and fell onto cars parked by devotees who had arrived for the festival. However, no casualties have been reported so far.
The gusty winds shattered window panes on the fifth floor of Thrissur General Hospital, indicating the intensity of the weather conditions.
Authorities are assessing the damage as intermittent rains and winds continue to affect several parts of the district.
