MANY traditional headmen in KwaMandlakazi and KwaNongoma in the Zululand District are battling severe financial hardship after allegedly going months, and in some cases years, without receiving their salaries.
The affected izinduna (headmen) say they have exhausted all avenues in their attempts to resolve the matter and are now contemplating resigning from their positions due to what they describe as inaction by the KwaZulu-Natal Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs (Cogta).
The izinduna spoke on condition of anonymity, fearing possible repercussions for speaking publicly about their plight.
One induna said he has been serving his community without pay for the past three years despite numerous attempts to have the matter resolved.
