A woman has returned home after successful heart surgery in Fiji for a serious heart condition that doctors said had threatened her life.

Maria Asuelu travelled to Fiji for specialist treatment and was admitted to Pacific Specialist Healthcare(PSH) Hospitals after being diagnosed with rheumatic heart disease, which had severely damaged her heart valve.

Doctors performed a mechanical mitral valve replacement, a major procedure to restore proper heart function.

Cardiothoracic and vascular surgeon Dr. Sanjeev Kumar Khulbey led the operation. He said the surgery was urgent and was completed successfully without complications.

“Her surgery was uneventful, and she has made an excellent recovery,” he said.
