Apollo Hospitals, Greams Road, performed a Pulsed Field Ablation (PFA) procedure for atrial fibrillation (AF), a common heart rhythm disorder associated with an increased risk of stroke and heart failure. The procedure was carried out by Karthigesan A.M., senior consultant cardiologist and electrophysiologist, on a 73-year-old woman. She had hypertension and a pacemaker, and had been experiencing recurrent episodes of rapid heartbeat, palpitations, breathlessness, and worsening heart failure, despite being on multiple medications. Following the treatment, her heart rhythm returned to normal and her symptoms improved.PFA is a minimally invasive catheter-based procedure that uses ultra-short electrical pulses to selectively destroy abnormal heart tissue responsible for irregular rhythms while minimising injury to nearby structures.
