The High Court has, in a landmark ruling, given the government 90 days to develop regulations governing public demonstrations, picketing and the use of force against protesters.

This is in line with the Bill of Rights in the Constitution and a long overdue step in the right direction. It is an opportunity to establish clear guidelines for police conduct and respect for citizen rights. The regulations on public order management should ensure that citizens exercise their rights by offering clear guidelines to the National Police Service.

The court has also outlawed the deployment of plainclothes police officers during demonstrations. All the officers should be in uniform with their faces visible and clearly marked name tags.
