NEW ORLEANS — Continuous glucose monitoring may have a role for adults with type 2 diabetes who are not using insulin, according to results from the CONNECT trial.
“We know that CGM has been shown to be effective for individuals with any type of diabetes using insulin, but the data for the effectiveness of CGM for individuals with type 2 diabetes not on insulin is not as robust,” Thomas W. Martens, MD, medical director at the International Diabetes Center, an affiliate of HealthPartners Institute in Minneapolis, and consultant in internal medicine at Park Nicollet Clinic, said during a presentation at the American Diabetes Association Scientific Sessions.
About 20 million people in the U.S. have diabetes and are using noninsulin therapies, according to Martens.
“Even with GLP-1 therapy, SGLT2 therapy [and] multiple diabetes therapies, we know that many of these individuals have elevated HbA1c levels — and CGM may provide further benefit,” Martens said.
