Umkomaas crackdown: Municipal operation targets non-compliant businesses.
A municipal enforcement operation in Umkomaas on Thursday disrupted local businesses, leading to an unexpected halt in trading as officials targeted non-compliance.
The large-scale operation saw teams from multiple municipal departments fan out across the community, inspecting both formal and informal businesses for compliance with licensing, health and safety regulations, as well as immigration requirements.
The operation resulted in the arrest of two spaza shop owners and the closure of two businesses after officials found they were operating without the necessary documentation.
According to the municipality, the shop operators were unable to produce valid business licences and were also found to be in the country illegally.
