Municipality enforces compliance in Umkomaas: A crackdown on illegal trading.
For some business owners in Umkomaas, Thursday's municipal enforcement operation brought an abrupt end to a normal trading day as officials descended on the area in a sweeping crackdown on non-compliant businesses.
The large-scale operation saw teams from multiple municipal departments fan out across the community, inspecting both formal and informal businesses for compliance with licensing, health and safety regulations, as well as immigration requirements.
The operation resulted in the arrest of two spaza shop owners and the closure of two businesses after officials found they were operating without the necessary documentation.
According to the municipality, the shop operators were unable to produce valid business licences and were also found to be in the country illegally.
