The Forest Department has closed Kovai Courtallam to visitors following a surge in water flow caused by heavy rain in the Western Ghats on Saturday.
Coimbatore district has intensified its preparedness for the southwest monsoon as widespread rains continues across the region.District Collector Pavankumar G. Giriyappanavar directed authorities to ensure that relief centres are ready to accommodate people in vulnerable areas and that departments, including Revenue, Local Administration, Police, Fire and Rescue Services, Highways, Electricity, Public Works and Health remain prepared to respond to rain-related emergencies.Officials were instructed to keep equipment such as excavators, power saws and sandbags ready for immediate deployment to clear fallen trees, landslides and road blockages. Local bodies were asked to identify flood-prone locations, remove obstructions to water flow and maintain adequate stocks of materials required for flood mitigation and restoration works.The District Collector also directed officials to ensure the availability of essential commodities, emergency medicines, ambulances and generators. The Electricity Department was asked to be prepared to restore power supply in the event of disruptions caused by heavy rain and strong winds. Agriculture Department officials were instructed to assess crop damage promptly and facilitate relief assistance to affected farmers.Meanwhile, the Forest Department on Saturday (June 6) announced the temporary closure of Kovai Courtallam after heavy rains in the Western Ghats caused a surge in water flow at the waterfall. In a statement, the Forest Range Officer of Boluvampatti Forest Range said the eco-tourism destination was being closed on June 6 as a precautionary measure to ensure public safety in view of flooding at the falls.The closure comes amid forecasts of continued wet weather in the district. According to the India Meteorological Department (IMD), heavy rain under generally cloudy conditions is likely from June 6 to June 10. Maximum temperatures are expected to range between 31°C and 32°C, while minimum temperatures are likely to remain between 23°C and 24°C.The IMD has also forecast partly cloudy skies with the possibility of moderate rain or thunderstorms on June 11 and 12, indicating that wet weather is likely to persist across the region over the coming week.To facilitate emergency response during the monsoon, the district administration has activated round-the-clock control rooms. People can contact the District Emergency Operations Centre at 1077 or 0422-2306051, the Coimbatore Corporation control room at 0422-2302323, Pollachi Municipality at 04259-220999 and Mettupalayam Municipality at 04254-222151 to report rain-related incidents and seek assistance.
