President Cyril Ramaphosa presided over the official roll-out of Lenacapavir, a twice-yearly injectable drug designed for HIV prevention on Friday.
The launch, held at the Lilian Ngoyi Stadium in Secunda, Mpumalanga, marks a pivot point in the nation's efforts to curb new infections.
The injectable treatment offers a significant shift from the daily pill burden that has defined HIV prevention for decades. By providing powerful protection through just two doses per year, health officials hope to drastically lower barriers to adherence.
"This represents the triumph of science over despair," President Cyril Ramaphosa said, addressing the crowd.
