Residents of Mudhalipalayam Panchayat in Tiruppur district took part in the Grama Sabha meeting on Friday, (June 5), wearing black attire, to express dismay over the delay on the part of authorities in cleaning up the abandoned quarries utilised by the Tiruppur City Corporation for dumping unsegregated solid wastes.During the meeting conducted in observance of World Environment Day, they displayed bottles containing highly-contaminated ground water from the vicinity of the quarries, prevailed upon the officials to adopt resolutions for covering the dump site with HDPE liner sheets, removing the garbage, and clearing the leachate.Espousing the cause of the villagers, P. Velusamy, environmental activist, complained that the Tiruppur City Municipal Corporation as well as the Tamil Nadu Pollution Control Board had failed to comply with the directive of the High Court for carrying out environmental remediation within a stipulated time frame.Acknowledging that the new State Government must be given more time to act on their complaints, the villagers said they would, for sure, boycott the next Grama Sabha meeting on August 15.The villagers accompanied the officials to the quarry site for a spot-assessment of the environmental damage.
