: The harsh action by the police on the residents of Ichipatti panchayat near Palladam who have been protesting against the move by the Tiruppur Corporation to dump wastes in an abandoned quarry has drawn flak from different quarters.

The protesting residents were forcibly dispersed by the police on Tuesday when they prevented the garbage-laden lorries from entering the village.

The villagers complained that they will be robbed of their livelihood if the garbage is dumped in the quarry, citing their dependence on the land in the surroundings for grazing of cattle.

Residents of about 10 hamlets in the surroundings also lent their support to the protesters in Ichipatti, expressing their apprehensions over contamination of groundwater.

Some of the protesters, including women, were injured in the crackdown by the police, on Saturday.
