Residents of Vasan Valley, a suburban residential locality in Tiruchi straddling the panchayats of Nachikurichi and Malliampathu, have raised concern over the bad condition of roads in the neighbourhood and urged the authorities to rectify the issue at the earliest.“There are around 1,500 families living in the housing layout that has 5,000 plots, with 17 cross roads and six main roads. While some sections have proper tar roads, some have got eroded, and yet others are mud paths. We have been requesting the authorities over the years to uniformly re-lay the roads across the Vasan Valley compound, but it is in a shambles,” K. Mahendran, 44, who has been a resident of the area for over 15 years, told The Hindu on Friday.Residents said that the problem had worsened after authorities laid out gravel and crushed stone on the cross sections of two interior roads simultaneously shortly before the elections in April, but did not complete the remaining surface paving.“We are struggling to drive our vehicles on this rocky and uneven stretch. It is a safety hazard for pedestrians too; recently two senior citizens slipped and fell while trying to walk across. It was easier when we had just mud roads,” said another resident of the colony.Vasan Valley’s patchy roads have made it impossible for ambulances to enter the area, and autorickshaws regularly turn down commuters from here unless they are willing to walk to the main road. On windy days, fine dust particles rising from the partially milled roads create visibility problems for two-wheeler drivers and cyclists.“The locality has been inhabited by approximately 5,000 people of all ages for close to 16 years. Despite this, we do not have proper arrangements for basic needs such as underground drainage, garbage collection, and street lighting. The bad roads are only adding to the problems of the residents. We hope the new government will take note and help us out,” said Mr. Mahendran. Published - June 05, 2026 07:33 pm IST
